Sarracenia purpurea, also known as the purple pitcher plant, northern pitcher plant, turtle socks, or side-saddle flower, is a carnivorous plant in the family Sarraceniaceae that lives in American bogs.

 

The pitcher plant is a perennial forb, or herbaceous flowering plant, that spreads by short rhizomes (like underground stems). Plants form an open, spreading rosette of green leaves, which are often tinged or veined with purple, and can grow to 30 cm in length. The plants flower in mid-spring, producing a solitary flower at the top of a scape 20 – 40 cm tall.

 

Sarracenia purpurea goes by multiple names, including "purple pitcher plant" or the "northern pitcher plant" (due to the geographic range in which it grows). On the other hand, what is sometimes referred to as "Burk's southern pitcher plant" was previously classified as a varietal of S. purpurea.

 

However, in 1999 botanists determined that the "southern pitcher plant" was morphologically distinct enough from S. purpurea to be elevated to its own species. The scientific name for "southern pitcher plant" is now Sarracenia rosea
