Frequently Asked Questions

Where are MaryRuth's products made?

MaryRuth's products are made in several facilities around the US, Canada and the EU, with ingredients sourced from around the world!

What is the difference between an expiration date and a manufacture date?

You've probably noticed that some dietary supplements have an expiration date (sometimes called best-if-used-by date, and best-by date), while others include a manufacture date instead. What is the difference between them all?

When used on a product, Manufacture Date is often abbreviated as “MFG”. This is the date that the product was made. A product with an Expiration Date will generally have the abbreviation “EXP”. This is the date that the product is determined to expire. Similarly, best-if-used-by date, and best-by date: abbreviated as “BB”. These dates indicated that a product is best if consumed by that date.

There are a wide variety of reasons why a company may choose to use manufacture dates over expiration dates on their products, and one is not necessarily better than the other. Most companies, regardless of whether they use manufacture dates or expiration dates, have many other quality assurance measures in place to make sure that, as a consumer, you are receiving the best possible product!

Does MaryRuth's test products for Quality Assurance?

Yes! Each lot of our products are third party tested for content claims and potential contaminants (like microbial and heavy metals). To ensure product quality and safety, MaryRuth's only uses ISO 17025 Certified labs for our third party testing. The Certificate of Analysis (CoA) must pass our standards to be released for sale. It's important to us to be able to provide our customers with quality products so you feel comfortable trusting our brand, and confident in your health choices!

We are also excited to mention that we have been working on getting our products certified by the Clean Label Project! The Clean Label project is a non-profit that focuses on bringing awareness to environmental contaminants in consumer products, and certifying products that meet testing requirements. At this time, we have over 100 of our products certified by the Clean Label Project, and we are actively working on adding more to this list. To learn more about the Clean Label Project and what it means, check out our blog article about CLP!

How can I find MaryRuth's heavy metal test results?

To view MaryRuth's heavy metals results for products indicated for children under the age of two and produced after January 1st, 2025, visit our Heavy Metal Test Results page. We are in the process of adding heavy metal test results for prenatal vitamins to this same page.

For products for which heavy metal test results are not provided on this page, consumers can request Certificates of Compliance according to our current policy.

What are sugar alcohols, and why does MaryRuth's use them in products?

Thanks for reaching out with your question! We would love to share some additional information about sugar alcohols and why we choose to formulate with them.

Sugar Alcohols do not contain any kind of drinking alcohol, though the molecular structure does resemble sugar and part is similar to alcohol. They differ from sugar in caloric content and health impact, since the body digests them differently.

Sugar alcohols, also called polyols, are carbohydrates that are not completely metabolized by the body, converting to glucose more slowly than other carbohydrates and requiring little to no insulin to be metabolized. For example, xylitol, one sugar alcohol that we use, has 40% fewer calories than sugar, and is significantly lower on the glycemic index.

MaryRuth's uses sugar alcohols in some of our products to make them more palatable and as a great sugar substitute for many of our products! This way we are able to make great tasting, low or no sugar supplements. We hope this additional information helps. Please let us know if you have any additional questions we can assist with!

Is the entire MaryRuth's product line vegan?

We believe that making the best supplements for your health means creating products with non-GMO, plant-based, organic, vegan ingredients, with the fewest number of allergens possible.

All of our dietary supplements are vegan, meaning they are formulated without animal products, animal byproducts, or any ingredients derived from animal sources. This includes the exclusion of common animal-derived components such as gelatin, dairy, eggs, honey, collagen, shellfish, and lanolin. We carefully select plant-based or lab-produced alternatives to ensure that each formula aligns with vegan standards while maintaining quality, efficacy, and integrity.

Does MaryRuth's offer free samples of products to try?

While MaryRuth's doesn't offer sample sizes at this time, our Happiness Guarantee allows customers to try any product for up to 30 days, and, if not satisfied, receive store credit that can be used toward a future purchase on our website.

Does MaryRuth's ship internationally?

Thanks for reaching out! At this time, MaryRuth's does not ship internationally, but we have partnered with iHerb to make our products available more widely. We also have a team dedicated to getting our products in more countries throughout the world.

If you like, let us know what country you are located in, so we share any verified retailers near you!

Are MaryRuth's products safe?

The safety and quality of our products are of the utmost importance to us! As a dietary supplement brand, we aim to make products for your health and the health of your families, so we've been working hard with Clean Label Project (CLP) to demonstrate our commitment to the safety and quality of our products. Aside from our internal testing requirements, CLP tests our products for certification on an annual basis, for hundreds of industrial and environmental contaminants and toxins. We are CLP Brand Certified, have over 170 of our products certified by the Clean Label Project, and we are actively working on adding more products from our catalog to this list.

What do AB 899 and SB 646 say are acceptable levels for heavy metals?

Neither state baby food testing laws nor Senate Bill (SB) 646 establish new allowable limits for heavy metals in dietary supplements or baby food. Instead, these laws focus on transparency by requiring manufacturers to test for certain heavy metals and publicly disclose the results. State baby food laws, including California AB 899, apply to baby food, while SB 646 applies specifically to prenatal multivitamins. Their purpose is to help consumers access testing information—not to set new “acceptable” levels for heavy metals. While MaryRuth's supplements intended for children under 2 are not considered “baby food,” we are providing results to help you make informed choices for your family.

At MaryRuth's, we use Prop 65 as our parameters for heavy metal testing, and we work closely with the Clean Label Project to assure our customers that we take product safety seriously.

I'm new to supplements, where is a good place to start?

If you ask MaryRuth this question, she will answer that the best place to start is the raspberry-flavored Liquid Morning Multivitamin! This was our original product and it is still one of MaryRuth's very favorite products. It is a great tasting, sugar-free, broad spectrum multivitamin, in an easy-to-take liquid with an adjustable dose for the whole family (ages 1+).

You might also check out our Triad of Health, which includes the Liquid Morning Multivitamin, as well as the Liquid Nighttime Multimineral and our Organic Liquid Probiotic; this trio supports overall health, digestive and gut health, immune support, as well as sleep regulation and relaxation!

With a product line of over 200 products, we have many products for focused support, from digestive health to calming to immune support, to sleep products, brain health, and so on. If you are looking for something specific, we encourage you to check out the shop “By Focus” menu on our webpage, with many options to choose from! You can also reach out to our Customer Care team with your specific interest, and the team can make suggestions for you!

Lastly, we always want to encourage our customers to consult with their healthcare professionals for guidance when it comes to supplementing! While we create our products to help meet supplementing needs, there are many individual considerations that we are unable to account for when formulating, such as diet, existing health conditions, and contraindications with prescription medications, and your physician or healthcare professional can help you make the best choices for your health.

How does a brand obtain Clean Label Project Certification?

In order to earn Clean Label Project Certification, Clean Label Project purchases products at retail (or online) and tests them for purity, specifically testing for chemicals of concern, including heavy metals, pesticide residues, and endocrine-disrupting plasticizers.

These test results are not just compliant with federal standards, which should be considered the bare minimum of safety standards, but are compared to high risk chemicals listed on the State of California Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Office's Proposition 65 list. If the product is found to comply, it qualifies for Clean Label Project Certification. After initial testing for certification, the products undergo random annual testing, to make sure they're being held to the same standards on an ongoing basis.

At this time, we have over 100 of our products certified by the Clean Label Project, and we are actively working on adding more products from our catalog to this list. These products have earned their certification after being tested for hundreds of industrial and environmental contaminants and toxins.

We hope all this information helps to build a better understanding of Clean Label Project, but to learn more, check out our blog article about CLP!

What is 'ppb' and 'ppm'?

In an effort to move “closer to zero”, we are reporting all potential contaminants in parts per billion rather than parts per million. Closer to Zero is an initiative led by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce childhood dietary exposure to contaminants to as low as possible, while maintaining access to nutritious foods. As a brand, we take the responsibility of moving “closer to zero” seriously!

PPB stands for parts per billion, and is a unit used to measure very small concentrations of a substance within another: one unit in a billion. Picture an Olympic-sized swimming pool (about 2.5 million liters). 1 ppb is roughly half a teaspoon of water in that entire pool. Alternatively, imagine that you have a billion identical marbles, and just one of them was a different color; that one marble would be “1 part per billion.”

Parts per billion can also be expressed as microgram per kilogram (ug/kg), or micrograms of a substance per kilogram of another substance. Since one serving of a dietary supplement is a very small fraction of a kilogram, a calculation is required to convert parts per billion, or microgram per kilogram, and to adjust for the density of a liquid to estimate the actual exposure from a serving. It is the exposure per serving that is relevant to benchmarks set by California Proposition 65 or the Clean Label Project, and the exposure per serving for a dietary supplement is usually a small fraction of the parts per billion or microgram per kilogram level reported.

Please be assured that our products are only released for sale once we are sure they meet the standards of California Proposition 65 and the Clean Label Project.

What is Clean Label Project, and why is it important?

We're so excited to be working with Clean Label Project, and we are happy to share more about what Clean Label Project is and why we are working on obtaining Clean Label Project certification for our products.

Clean Label Project is a non-profit focused on educating consumers about environmental contaminants in consumer products on the market today, promoting science-based techniques to advocate for cleaner food and consumer products on behalf of the public. Clean Label Project (CLP) is on the frontier of food safety, working to shift the curve from the bare minimum of federal standards to a higher standard of food safety. In addition to this work, CLP certifies products that meet rigorous testing requirements.

Here at MaryRuth's, we're voluntarily thinking about food safety differently, and we are proud to say that we are Clean Label Project Brand Certified. At this time, we have 71 individual products certified by the Clean Label Project, and we are actively working on adding more products from our catalog to this list. These products have earned their certification after being tested for hundreds of industrial and environmental contaminants and toxins.

We believe in the mission of CLP, and, considering the realities of societal choices around mining, fracking, and industrial agriculture, we want to do our part to make sure we are making clean and pure products! To learn more about the Clean Label Project and what it means, check out our blog article about CLP!

What's so great about liquid supplements?

Our product line originated with our Raspberry Morning Liquid Multivitamin, developed by MaryRuth as a result of her experiences in her early practice as a health educator and nutritional consultant. MaryRuth found, in coaching her customers with Liquids Till Lunch, that her clients felt nauseated by taking their capsule supplements on an empty stomach. She wanted to create an easy-to-take product that tasted great and so, the first product — our Raspberry Multi — was created!

We have a wide variety of liquid supplements available, ranging from droppers to sprays to liposomals, which are unique in their delivery form and provide increased bioavailability with liposomal technology! The great thing about many liquid supplements is that you can adjust the dose to meet your supplementing needs or those of your family.

Ultimately, in order to make the best health decisions possible for you and your family, we recommend speaking with your physician or healthcare professional to determine what supplements are suitable for your everyday care.

Should I do bloodwork testing before taking supplements?

While not necessary, most information suggests getting bloodwork done prior to starting a new supplement regimen to establish a baseline before further tests.

What is MaryRuth's doing to stay in compliance with this new bill?

Since we already had heavy metal testing protocols in place, the main update for MaryRuth's is including the testing results on our website and sharing the address for that website on product packaging— we are excited about this requirement and are considering it an opportunity to move toward greater transparency with our test results.

What is AB 899?

AB 899 is a California legislative bill requiring manufacturers of baby food to test and disclose the levels of four heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury. AB 899 applies to baby food products sold, manufactured, delivered, held, or offered for sale in California (including any imported items), and it applies specifically to products made and marketed to children less than two years of age. Similar laws exist in other states.

Only California's bill was previously interpreted as to include dietary supplements. But in October 2025, California's Senate Bill 862 clarified that California's Assembly Bill 899 does not apply to dietary supplements.

Ultimately, the goal of AB 899 and similar laws in other states is to improve product safety, so parents and caregivers can make more educated decisions about the health of their families! MaryRuth's is aligned to this goal, so we are continuing to provide the heavy metal test results for products indicated for children under two.
