Q: I noticed that the serving size changed from 2 gummies to 1 gummy. Why is that?
A: As MaryRuth’s continues to grow and add new products to our line, we are also continuously reevaluating our current products to make sure that they reflect our customers' needs and wants for their health journeys. Our Biotin Gummies were one such product that we recently decided to take another look into.
We have gotten feedback from customers mentioning that they would like certain products to last longer, especially if they are sharing these supplements with their family. When looking into our Biotin gummies with this information, we noticed that in many studies about Biotin, they have shown that a dose of 2,500 mcg is sufficient to reap many of the benefits of this vitamin. Since a serving size of 2 of our Biotin gummies provided 5,000 mcg of Biotin (16,667 %DV), we believe that this supplement’s dosage can be cut in half to prolong the supply of these gummies, while still containing ample nutrients for the consumer. One gummy contains 2,500 mcg Biotin (8,333 % DV), as well as servings of other B vitamins that are still well above their recommended daily value.
Though our suggested serving size and label are updated, you can be assured that the amount of Biotin per bottle and per gummy is the same as before; we did not decrease the overall amount of Biotin provided in this product. Two gummies will continue to provide 5,000 mcg of Biotin, and some people may opt to take the original dose recommendation. If you do opt to decrease your dose, the good news is that the supply of the bottle doubles (60 days)! Whichever dosage you decide to take, we always advise that you speak with your physician or healthcare professional to ensure you’re taking the right amount for your health.
Q: How does biotin support hair, skin and nails?
Keratin is a protein and the key structural component that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. Biotin support’s the body’s keratin infrastructure. But this product isn’t just a biotin supplement! It also contains vitamins B9 (Folate) and B12 (as Methylcobalamin), Zinc and Fo-Ti Extract. B-vitamins are vital to creating red blood cells, which carry nutrients and oxygen to the skin and scalp, promoting healthy hair. Zinc is known for its role in cellular metabolism and the maintenance of skin integrity, crucial for tissue growth and repair, while Fo-Ti has long been used in traditional medicines!
Q: I am balding; will this save my hair?
A: If you are experiencing hair loss from androgenic alopecia, often referred to as male-pattern baldness, this gummy will not, regrettably, save your hair! Unfortunately, there is no “cure” for such hair loss. This gummy will most greatly benefit those who are experiencing hair loss from zinc and biotin deficiencies; studies link those deficiencies with hair loss. Vegetarians and vegans are more likely to be deficient in zinc, biotin and B-vitamins. Consult with your physician or healthcare professional if you are interested in learning more about vitamin deficiencies.
Q: I read that overdosing on Fo-Ti can lead to liver damage! Is this amount safe?!
A: While a recommended, or safe, dosage has not been established for Fo-Ti extract, there has been a systematic review of case reports wherein Fo-Ti leads to liver damage. This medical review showed that such extreme reaction is rare, and comes with very high doses in conjunction with long-term use. Though ranging, the average dosage in these cases was 15 g, which is 3000 times higher than what is in our serving size (5 mg).
However, if you are concerned about using Fo-Ti, particularly if you have pre-existing health conditions or you are taking medications, please consult your physician or healthcare professional. If you experience adverse reactions to this product, please discontinue use immediately and consult your physician or healthcare professional.
Q: I have MTHFR gene variant(s). Is this product safe for me?
A: Navigating B-vitamins and MTHFR can be tricky! While there is a considerable amount of information coming out on genetic variations and how they affect our biochemistry and health, the MTHFR deficiency is not yet fully understood, including how various B-vitamins affect any given individual. Elevated homocysteine levels, often caused by the MTHFR gene variants, is associated with deficiencies in B9 (Folate), B6 and B12.
The primary concern for those with MTHFR gene variant(s) is Folate (vitamin B9). People with MTHFR gene variant(s) need to avoid synthetic forms of folate (B9), like Folic Acid. There seems to be some evidence that Folinic Acid is safe for those with the less severe MTHFR gene variants, while preliminary studies show that those with more severe MTHFR variants may require 5-MTHF (Methylated Folate) supplementation and/or treatment with betaine (trimethylglycine) to aid in metabolizing homocysteine.
Our Biotin Gummies contain Methylated Folate (as Calcium L-5-methyl-THF). Methylated folate is considered safest for those with MTHFR, especially for people who have multiple MTHFR variants. If you are unsure whether or not you should take a product with Calcium L-5-methyl-THF, please speak with your physician.
In general, when starting any new health and wellness supplement, you should check with your physician or healthcare professional to make sure the supplement is suitable for you and your health. This is especially true when there is the added complexity of the MTHFR gene variants. We encourage you to partner with your healthcare professional to determine the best course of action.
