Tips for Mindful Technology Use During Summer Months

As school is out and schedules are changing over the summer, we wanted to give you a gentle reminder to try to fill your days in ways that’ll make you feel great.

Something that we’ve discussed as a team during our time blocking workshops with MaryRuth is how to have mindful use of technology.

Just like most things in life, it’s important to feel a sense of balance. It can be easy to get stuck spending too much time on our phones, computers, and tablets — even when we had plans to accomplish other things in our day.

If you’re looking to be more mindful of how much time you’re spending on technology, we have a few tips to help you out.

Track your technology use

First, ask yourself: how many hours do you want to spend daily on social media? How many hours do you want to dedicate to your other tasks?

This number will be different for everyone, and that’s ok. It’s all about finding a healthy balance of what works for you.

Many devices now allow you to even put limits on how much time you want to spend on certain applications, so you can make sure you’re following through with the limits you want to adhere to.

You can also time block when you want to give yourself moments to spend with your device, and when you want to accomplish other tasks.

Keep in mind that one hour per day adds up to seven hours per week spent on social media. How much time do you actually want to reserve for technology?

Power down before bed

We know, we know — it’s tempting to scroll on your device before laying in bed, but that may not be the best way to help prepare your body to sleep.

We recommend powering down all devices an hour before bed to avoid blue light, which can affect sleep.

You can take this time to dedicate towards other parts of a calming nighttime routine for sleep, such as meditating, doing your skincare routine, or reading a book.

Have fun with time for yourself & loved ones

No matter how much time you decide to spend on activities that you find fun, it’s a good idea to have a more mindful approach to technology in general.

And if you need some support to find your calm or energy levels, we are here to help!
