How to Support Your Energy Levels

At one point or another, we all end up needing an energy boost during the day to keep us moving.


Eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, reducing our stress levels, and getting regular exercise are some natural ways we can use to make sure our energy levels are at their best. If you’re still feeling like you need a boost during the day, here are a few tips and supplements that may help!



1. Drink half you bodyweight, in ounces, of water every day

Because we lose water throughout the day through urine and sweat, we need to make sure that we’re making up for our losses through the water that we drink. Otherwise, dehydration affects our energy, mood and brain function.


This is how much to drink: half your body weight, in ounces in water. So if you weigh 150lbs, drink 75 ounces of water every day.


2. Say "No, thank you" to alcohol

Alcohol is a depressant, and as such, it can cause drowsiness. Alcohol can also interfere with healthy sleep habits, undermining getting the sort of rest your body needs.


3. Avoid smoking

The build-up of toxins and tar that occur in your lungs from smoking can interfere with your body’s ability to transport oxygen and make you tired. Smoking also raises your likelihood of developing other negative health challenges such as heart disease and stroke.


4. Supplement with CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is naturally made in the body, but when it is not maintained in the body at adequate levels, fatigue can occur. CoQ10 helps our cells produce energy for themselves and protect themselves from oxidative damage. With low CoQ10, the cells are unable to release energy as normal. And, as we age, the body produces less CoQ10!




5. Supplement with Vitamin B12

B12 deficiency is quite common. If you fall into this category, this may contribute to your lack of energy. The nice thing about B12 is that it’s water soluble, so if you decide to supplement, whatever your body doesn’t need is removed by the body with your regular waste products!


6. Increase magnesium intake

Magnesium levels can affect your body multiple ways. If you’re deficient, not only do your sleep cycles suffer, but your body isn’t as capable of turning glucose into energy. To increase your magnesium levels, you can adjust your diet to include more magnesium-rich foods, like almonds or you may choose to take a supplement.


7. Check thyroid function

Some people who find themselves tired or lacking energy may have thyroid issues. To determine if this may be the underlying cause of your tiredness, speak with your physician or healthcare professional about getting a blood test. A blood test can also be run to test for anemia, which also may lead to tiredness or lethargy. There are so many factors that contribute to energy levels. Our best bet to keep our energy up is by treating our bodies well: eating right, getting adequate sleep & exercise and so forth. But learning more about what supplements our bodies need — magnesium, B12, CoQ10 and so forth — can help support energy levels too!
